In the near future, personal computers take the form attractive women, called Persocons (editorial note: "persocons" actually means PC or personal computer in Japanese). Hideki Motosuwa is a poor student who failed his entrance exams to get into college. So, Hideki is forced to move to the city, get a job, and attend cram school in hopes of passing the next college entrance exam. He of course, wants a Persocon for himself, but is way too poor to afford one. One day, while passing a building, we finds a Persocon in a trash heap. However, his new find doesn't seem to be like the others he's heard about. She doesn't seem to have any operating system at all, and only says "Chii". As Hideki learns more about his Persocon (aptly named "Chii"), he finds that she is not of any known type, and most likely some sort of homemade model. He also learns of the rumor of the "Chobits", Persocons with the ability to think for themselves, instead of running only complex programs. Find out what happens between Hideki and his new Persocon, as she learns more about her environment, people, and life.
Cast & Seiyuu:
Chii - Tanaka Rie
Animation - Chii is cute. Hideki is uhm....Typical CLAMP characters.
Story and Plot - Ecchi - that's the whole thing, set aside love story. Mysteries were not revealed until episode 20, and boy, were they predictable.
Music - Familiar backgrounds with the irritating "Let me Be with You" opening. I do admit though, that the music goes well with the scenes.
Enjoyment - Lacks depth, and it's not even romantic. But Chii is definitely cute (agree?)
CLAMP's Chobits is far from what I actually expected. This anime has been a real surprise after watching the most popular CLAMP animes (CCS, Magic Knight Rayearth, RG Veda and Angelic Layer). Although this anime is as humurous as the rest, Chobits contained themes that are not recommended for the younger audience. This has not been considered under the category hentai, however there are some scenes that are provoking and quite disturbing.
Chii is definitely the kawaii-est girl (or persocon) I have seen. I'm greatly moved by her innocence, her sweet attitude towards learning. Everything about Chobits simply revolves around her, well of course, that includes the main guy - "perverted" Hideki. What I really liked about this anime is the approach of the story: indeed, it gave me a thought or two about the future of the society - about robots overpowering that of mankind. Not really original, but Chobits did prove it's worth a look.
Before I reveal the downs of the anime, I'd like to point out the ups first. Chobits is not just about Chii and persocons, but actually about the humans themselves. It showed one aspect of the never-ending quest of mankind to develop a better way of living. It seemed man is no longer satisfied with the functions of a non-talking computer that does whatever task is on hand. Chobits revealed the "need" for machine and companionship brought together. A Persocon that you can talk to as a friend, yet still functions like a computer that helps you with lots of things, particularly on the expanding trend of internet connectivity. It seems that the "persocons" are symbols that humans would likely to tie down with technology someday. So much that it would be like oxygen for them. That's why to keep this and at the same time, retain the nature man's need for "love and affection", persocons are produced.
*So onto the downs*...
What made me decide to give it a 4/5 rating instead is the fact that CLAMP seemed to have failed to produce the anime effectively. The whole thing lightened up almost at the end: episode 20+. The first ones were simply hitting around the bush, with no way of direction. They tried to focus on one thing, yet they failed to end it adequately or justifiably. Like Yumi's love for Manager Ueda: their breakup and her always mourning over him. It wasn't "satisfactory" with how this scene turned out in the end. Way too fast for something as mysterious as how it was implied in the previous episodes.
I also noticed that the mysteries just piled up one after the other, yet the revelation part was like produced out of mockery. I stood there and said "Huh? So that's just it??" I really thought there will be "fights" between Chii and the two persocons guarding her database (because they really looked cool - and powerful). Yet everything, everything...just went down to Chii revealing her true feelings for Hideki (who doesn't deserve it, by the way). Some characters were wasted. Others were just the same. Chobits has little progress on the character development. Well, Chii is really cute.
Another thing that I'd like to consider as a down is that CLAMP failed to answer all the intrigues about the anime. They showed Chii's past, yet they didn't really reveal much about the origin of the persocons - like how other animes were able to provide. They merely gave screencaps of Chii's past, but other than that, it was a closed book. There are many things interesting about persocons, but it seemed CLAMP didn't have time for other stuff except for Chii and Hideki.
Okay, some people might argue about this, but one of the worst downs of Chobits is the character himself - Hideki Motosuwa. He's one perverted guy who liked collecting okazus (adult magazines), which even influenced sweet Chii! His thoughts were always about women, about sex and lust - which is not quite expected from a main character. Okay, he's nice to Chii and all..but sometimes his attitude towards maliciousness is terribly annoying! ^ ^ Well, at least, that's one real guy. Men do think about women, sex and lust.
Overall, Chobits is one of a kind. Science Fiction, yet a naturally simple comedy classic that will surely satisfy your hunger for CLAMP animes! ^ ^
